About the Centre
The Garhwal Regional Centre of the Institute was established in June 23, 1989 and started its operation for about four (4) years (R & D activities) from HAPPRC, HNB Garhwal University, Srinagar Garhwal. In March 1993, the Unit was shifted in tiny residential Building of Jalagam Project supported by World Bank, U.P. at Upper Bhaktiyana, Srinagar Garhwal. Because of the placement of its HQs and one of the Unit (Garhwal Unit) in the Uttarankhand, the state has gained the maximum in comparison to any other Unit.
The Garhwal Regional Centre (GRC) has been actively working in the field of biotechnology, water resource sustainability, tourism and climate change impacts along with dynamic engagement in training and demonstration through several skill development programs. In essence, it caters to the regional needs of diversification of livelihood options in rural ecosystems by demonstrations of eco-friendly rural technologies, water resources management, sustainable land use and eco-friendly tourism practices in field demonstration sites located in different districts of Garhwal Region.
Objectives
-Assessing water resources, rejuvenation of traditional sources through integrated watershed management and implementation.
- Undertaking in-depth studies on documentation and validation of indigenous knowledge systems of traditional communities and their on-going interactions as the basis for protecting, safeguarding and improving the living condition of the people.
- Approaches for sustainable natural resources for income generation through blending advance knowledge with traditional knowledge for bringing innovative solutions locally.
- Monitoring biodiversity for developing future scenarios of structural and functional ecology and conservation.
- Developing plant propagation packages for conservation, management and large scale cultivation using biotechnological and microbiological tools. The Centre also contributes in sensitization of local stakeholders towards Swatch Bharat Abhiyan.

Major Achievements
Development of model demonstration
Development of model demonstration on rehabilitation of degraded land at 4 locations (covering 22 ha) using agroforestry and restoration ecological approaches. A pilot impact assessment exercise was held recently. Progress in terms of replications has been shown but steady and encouraging.
Identification and promotion
Identification and promotion of value addition to wild edibles as a source for off-farm income generation to rural populace.
In-depth action and scientific research on Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (NDBR)
In-depth action and scientific research on Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve (NDBR) areas form the basis for developing priority options for resolving policy-people conflicts on one hand and sustainable management of bioresources on the other. The wide scientific coverage motivated UNESCO (Man & Biosphere Programme), New Delhi Public Service Braodcasting Trust, Govt. of India (as part of view communication) to document the outcome which was brought in the form of film “Invocations to the Mountain Goddess.” and a film on “Nanda Devi the Hill Goddess.”
Technical manual for artificially recharging of springs
A technical manual for artificially recharging of springs has been submitted to Rudraprayag district's DFO, and a combined initiative for constructing pits and trenches is under planning.
Database on 152 accessions of Rajmash from Uttarakhand
Database on 152 accessions of Rajmash from Uttarakhand has been prepared in the Centre following the standard pattern of NBPGR. Genetic resources developed through this study could be utilized by the breeders for large-scale screening of useful traits in common bean accessions and others Fabaceae members for conservation and production improvement. Demonstration of different accession has also been prepared for RTC Triyuginarayan.
